Namuga Hospital Project, Solomon Islands Building a Children’s Ward

Little Lives is excited to collaborate with The Namuga Hospital Project team to provide a children’s ward for this newly built health facility (see a completed section of hospital project below), which will serve a population of 22,000 people of the Star Harbour Area, as well as the two outlying islands of Santa Ana and Santa Catalina.

Dr Chris Millar, a GP in Murwillumbah, NSW, developed the Namuga Project in consultation with Chief John Woria, Paramount Chief of the Star Harbour Region, as well as Hon Martin Karani (Provincial Member for Star Harbour). The land upon which the hospital complex has been built is registered government land, which has been dedicated for this purpose.

This community-based initiative will provide services to a population who are currently unable to readily access any form of healthcare, due to geographical and economical limitations. The current hospital project includes a 24 bed main hospital and dedicated 20 bed tuberculosis unit. Little lives will fund the construction of a Children’s Ward, which will extend the current hospital provisions and provide a specific 10 bed paediatric facility. This project estimates total funding of AUD$32,000 for completion.

Around 40% of the population of the Solomon Islands is under the age of 15 ( WHO statistics 2013) Childhood morbidity and mortality is high due to lack of access to adequate healthcare resources. The proposed children’s ward in Star Harbour, Makira will support a paediatric population of approximately 19,000. It will aim to reduce the incidence of maternal, perinatal and childhood mortality for children under 5, targeting major health areas such as viral gastroenteritis, malaria, tuberculosis and other tropical disease.

Little Lives will support this project over the next 12 – 24 months by fundraising for 3 phases:

  • Phase 1: Timber costs (Approximately AUD$10,000)
  • Phase 2: Hardware costs (Approximately AUD $12,000)
  • Phase 3: Labour costs (Approximately AUD $10,000)

Building is planned to commence in Dec 2016 with the 1st staff complement arriving early in 2017. Please help us to support this worthwhile project and achieve our goal.
